ENVIRONMENTAL MAP INITIATIVE
Two maps of Cupar and its surrounding area, produced as part of a Fife Council initiative to reduce the air pollution levels in the town and promote healthy living. The design brief asked for two clear and friendly maps. The first map aimed to raise awareness of walking paths/routes within the town and to promote their use as an alternative to the car, encouraging local people to walk to their in-town destinations. The second map aimed to promote the various walking and cycling paths that exist within the local area.
The maps were created using a colour palette drawn from the nature and wildlife surrounding the town. Smooth lines and the soft, natural tones create a pleasant and welcoming look. The use of large, flat colours to represent open spaces keeps the map clean and tidy. The paths and important markings are highlighted in either sharp, brighter colours or stark, blacks; both stand out and clearly communicate the information.
The maps were generated from original field surveys and out-dated Ordnance Survey maps. Initial draft work involved collaborating with a local surveyor.
